Flavors of St. Croix

Dining

Caribbean islands boast unique and diverse influences that contribute to the dishes and flavors offered up at local restaurants and eateries. That is certainly true of St. Croix.

Super fresh seafood with local seasonings and preparation is, of course, highly sought out by food-loving travelers to our island. Whether you have an appetite for mahi, wahoo, tuna, conch or lobster that is same-day fresh, the sea’s bounty can be found on menus all over the island. But here you can also find a perfect steak or pizza, fresh salads, jerk chicken, nachos, burgers and sandwiches as well as pasta and barbecue. From gourmet hideaways to grab-and-go grills. From beachside bistros to boardwalk bars. From coffee shops to cozy cafes. From farm-to-table experiences to food trucks on the roadside. St. Croix serves up a broad array of wining and dining options.

Our resorts and hotels offer up some of the best restaurants on the island. The Mermaid Restaurant at The Buccaneer serves up tasty food with a beachfront view. The famed resort also offers private dining options for special events at the Sugar Mill, The Brass Parrot and private cabana dining.

At Tamarind Reef Resort-Spa-Marina you can treat yourself to an infusion of Caribbean-style cuisine and delightful international flavors at their two on-site restaurants – The Galleon and the Deep End Bar & Grill. Both restaurants host regular live music and entertainment.

The Palms is another scenic restaurant nestled in the middle of The Palms at Pelican Cove. In addition to a varied menu, it also has live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you are hankering for authentic island barbecue then Rolling Smoke at Hotel on the Cay will make your tastebuds happy.
In Frederiksted, Beach Side Café at Sand Castle on the Beach offers dining with a view as does Eat With Fred at The Fred.

Because of our rich culture and history of having had seven different national flags flown over St. Crown as well as our international citizenry, St. Croix boasts true global dining flair.  Of course, no trip would be complete without trying true Cruzan dishes and fare.  Look for sweet potato curry soup, salted fish and johnnycakes, fish and fungi, rotis, pates, beans and rice or yummy kallaloo.

And since happy hour is pretty much any hour on the island, enjoy a refreshing locally brewed beer or locally made rum with your meals.

Leatherback Brewing Company produces authentic Virgin Islands craft beer with Caribbean grown ingredients and influences. So be sure to look for Leatherback’s Reef Life, Island Life, Beach Life, Smooth Sailing and their other brews at islands and bars around the island. The Leatherback brewery also offers a menu of food that includes starters, salads, wraps and pizza. The brewery and tasting room are located in the William Roebuck Industrial Park on the south side of the island. Several styles of beer are being brewed and is canned and kegged on site. Visitors can tour the facility and learn about the brewing process.

Another way to taste the spirt of St. Croix is through Mutiny Island Vodka from Sion Farm Distillery. You can experience and learn about the world's first and only Island Vodka®, made from breadfruit, that delivers the true taste of island life. When you tour Sion Farm Distillery, at the former home of St. Croix’s well-loved Island Dairies Company, you enter the sleek, newly renovated space that serves as their bar and tasting room. You can enjoy a view through a glass wall to the newly installed, state of the art artisanal copper still and watch as their master distiller and his team perform the science and art of hand-crafted Island Vodka. You can also dine and enjoy a menu of delicious food items while at Sion Farm.

The backdrop to your dining and tasting experiences might be Caribbean waters and our sandy and rocky coastline or a lively local hangout or basking in our laid back local vibe or lingering in elegant ambiance in one of our history-laden buildings. One thing we’re sure of is that St. Croix is a culinary destination that will both whet and satisfy your appetite!
